The winter solstice is near and last week I was pretty sure it was still November. But here we are, December. For nearly 30 years, my dad‘s cousin would invite extended family and friends to participate in her own St. Lucia Solstice fusion. Eat drink and be merry. But we would also shrive, burning the year’s bad juju in a solstice fire. Then we would wind through the house and pass candlelight to each and every person with reflections and blessings for the new year to come. It’s just something we did, but as an adult, it resonates with me much stronger than Christmas. I’m not a Christmas lady, folks! Not my thing. We don’t need more stuff, we need connection, friends, and light! There’s a lot of energy to shrive this year. The solstice is this coming Monday, December 21st, the shortest day of the year. What will you make of it? I made my blouse, grew these artichokes, and threw together this crown.
